Kubernetes Dashboard (archived)

Review the retired Kubernetes Dashboard access pattern and the project recommendation to use Headlamp.

Archived project migration pattern

Categories
Cloud Native Tools, Upstream Applications

Overview

Kubernetes Dashboard was a general-purpose web interface for Kubernetes clusters. The official repository was archived on January 21, 2026. The maintainers state that the project is no longer maintained and recommend Headlamp for new deployments.

An archived administration interface increases maintenance and security risk. Plan a migration to a maintained interface.

Pomerium can limit access to an existing Kubernetes Dashboard deployment while a team migrates away from the retired project. Pomerium does not make the archived software current or maintained.

How it works

Review the official archive notice and the recommendation to use Headlamp for new deployments.

If an existing deployment must remain online during migration, place its HTTP endpoint behind a narrow Pomerium route and keep the application authorization controls active.

Review Headlamp and the organization cluster-management requirements. Retire the Dashboard route when migration is complete.

Example

A team keeps a narrow Pomerium route in front of an existing Dashboard only while it migrates. It plans removal of the archived application and moves users to a maintained interface.

Considerations

  • A Pomerium route cannot fix vulnerabilities or maintenance gaps in archived software.

Sources and official resources

  • Protect access to Backstage developer portals and software catalogs as an upstream web application.

  • Protect access to Portainer container administration as an upstream web application.

  • Protect access to SUSE Rancher Manager cluster administration as an upstream web application.
